There’s an old story about a teacher pointing to the moon. A student, curious but distracted, stared at the teacher’s finger instead. The teacher smiled and said, “The finger points the way, but the moon is what you must see.”

Teaching is like this. The art of pointing the way, not toward us, but toward something much greater. It’s about creating the conditions for reflection, independence, and the inner strength to continue learning long after the lesson ends.

When we nurture autonomy, agency, and self-regulation, we offer more than knowledge. We offer tools for a lifetime. The confidence to keep seeking, exploring, and growing.

What might it look like to give learners even more space to see “the moon” for themselves? To think deeply, chart their own course, and carry what they discover into the rest of their lives?

How are you already creating these moments in the classroom?

What next?
